Android has plenty of great weather apps, but we don’t always get the full picture from even the best Android weather apps. Sure, they might tell me that it’s 46 degrees outside, but just because it’s cold doesn’t mean conditions are favorable for winter sports

January’s almost over and this is the first Android Apps Alert of 2012. Madness, I know, but things kept moving even while we were away dealing with CES and other things. App makers must have had their fingers hovering over the publish button because there have been plenty of apps and games released recently, so here’s a tidy little round-up of a few that you may want to grab

Google I/O is Google’s biggest developer event, and has become the launchpad for some big announcements relevant to consumers each year. I/O has grown beyond what Google can contain in two-days, so the Mountain View-based company is adding an extra day to the 2012 edition. Monica Tran of the Google I/O team has announced that I/O 2012 will take place June 27-29, 2012.

Given that Android tablet manufacturers aren’t doing much to differentiate the physical look of their tablet hardware , this moment was inevitable. I think that Google made good on its promise to revamp the Android UI so as to remove any need for custom UIs, but that won’t stop manufacturer’s from adding them in under the guise of “adding functionality”

Microsoft has filed suit against Barnes & Noble and two Android equipment manufacturers over alleged violations of its patents in Android products. The alleged patent violations are numerous, but Microsoft specifically cited “tabbing through various screens to find the information [users] need; surfing the web more quickly, and interacting with documents and e-books,” as proof that the Nook, and presumably Nook Color, violate Microsoft-held patents. You may immediately read that description and be confused as to exactly what that means

The Android Market has a healthy dose of apps available for download. Actually, you might say that it’s approaching overdose status thanks to the thousands of apps that are uploaded into the Market each month

One of the most popular standalone widgets for Android is Beautiful Widgets: a very customizable clock and 5-day weather forecast app. A bunch of minor settings toggles are included in the package as well, but the widget’s main attractions are the clocks and the animated weather forecasts.

Today, Google announced via their Google Mobile Blog that they have just updated their mobile Weather search page. The update is definitely a refinement to the former weather search page and makes Google mobile weather results feel more like a native app than something in the browser. If you go to your browser and search for ‘weather’ you will be presented with the new styling.

The popular Ngmoco iOS game Pocket God is now available in the Android market. I was a big fan of this game back when I had an iPhone, but so far the Android port is a bit of a mixed bag.
