Verizon Wireless passed up its chance on the Samsung Galaxy S II because it new it was going to launch a different killer Samsung smartphone — namely the one attributed to the pure Google experience. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was unveiled over a month ago, and while the model in the United Kingdom already launched, it has yet to be seen on American shores. In fact, even Canadian carriers quickly jumped to their respective websites informing customers of launch dates and other information.

Google originally said that Ice Cream Sandwich would be open-sourced shortly after the release of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but the code has actually been made public prior to the release of Google’s latest benchmark phone. Software engineer and Android Open Source Project member Jean Baptiste Queru just confirmed that Ice Cream Sandwich is being added to the Android source tree

HTC has finally given some cold-hard assurances about which of its current crop of phones can expect to receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. In a post to its Facebook page in the wee hours of the morning, HTC confirmed that it plans to deliver Ice Cream Sandwich to the following phones: HTC Amaze HTC EVO 3D, EVO Design 4G HTC Sensation, Sensation XE, and Sensation XL HTC Rezound These phones are part of the “first wave of devices,” signaling that more phones could snack on Ice Cream Sandwich once more testing is done and the company has time to see if they will be able to fit Android 4.0 on previous generation devices. In the meantime, these phones can count on receiving the update so long as there aren’t any last minute complications like the Gingerbread debacle
